Graffiti in Atlanta

What is Graffiti?
Graffiti is artwork painted, sprayed, or drawn on some surface in a public place. The word graffiti comes from the Italian word graffere, which means 'to scratch on a surface.'

The History of Graffiti

Graffiti originated in Philadelphia in 1967 but was not recognized as real artwork until the 1980’s. When graffiti reached Atlanta, the most popular spots to work were Krog Street Tunnel and along the BeltLine path. In 2011, one popular artist who goes by the name of HENSE was sued but later found not guilty. He proposed a grant to get graffiti legalized on Arizona Avenue and along the BeltLine which was passed. Today, graffiti has also been legalized on the Buford Highway Walk.
